In the treatment room

The recovery side almost every clinic leaves out.

A very gentle electrical current delivered through a small clip on the outer ear, where a branch of the vagus nerve sits close to the surface.

What it is

tVNS stands for transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation. A small clip sits on the outer ear and delivers a very gentle electrical current to a branch of the vagus nerve, which runs close to the surface at that point. "Transcutaneous" simply means through the skin — nothing is implanted and nothing breaks the skin.

Why it's here

Nearly everything else in a treatment room works on the muscle or the joint. This works on the body's rest-and-recover system instead. Most people who come in with a long-standing problem are carrying a recovery deficit alongside the mechanical one, and that half rarely gets addressed at all.

What it feels like

A light tingle at the ear is all most people notice. It isn't painful, and the intensity is set with you rather than for you.

How it's used

Selectively — where it suits your presentation and your goals. It's one component of a plan rather than a standalone treatment, and it's delivered by Jake, Principal Therapist.
